Is Myanmar Safe for Travel?

Myanmar is experiencing widespread armed conflict, political destabilization, and economic crisis following the military coup of February 2021. Fighting between military junta forces, ethnic armed groups, and anti-regime People's Defense Forces occurs across large swathes of the country. International governments advise against all travel to Myanmar, or urge avoiding all travel to conflict-affected states and reconsidering non-essential travel to major cities. Even in urban centers like Yangon and Mandalay, sudden explosions, nighttime curfews, mobile phone searches, and arbitrary detentions pose severe risks.

Things to Know Before You Go

Critical Security Guidance

  • Conflict States: You should avoid all travel to Active Conflict and Insurgency States, where aerial bombardments, artillery strikes, and heavy fighting are frequent.
  • Arbitrary Enforcement: Security forces conduct intrusive mobile phone checks at roadblocks; expressing political opinions or having anti-regime messages can lead to immediate arrest.
  • Night Curfews: Strict nighttime curfews remain in effect in many townships; you must remain indoors during specified curfew hours.
  • Cyber Scam Enclaves: Avoid travel toward border towns near Thailand and China, where human-trafficking syndicates operate coerced online scam centers.
  • Healthcare Collapse: The public medical system is severely impaired; carry comprehensive medical evacuation insurance.

Traveler Situations & Contexts

How risk shifts for solo travelers, nighttime transit, LGBTIQ+ travelers, and public transport.

Urban Safety in Yangon and Mandalay

In the primary urban centers, life appears outwardly functional in central business zones, but tension is pervasive. Improvised explosive devices regularly target municipal checkpoints, administrative offices, and power stations. You should avoid all political gatherings, never photograph security personnel or military installations, and keep your passport and valid visa on your person.

Nighttime Movement

Curfews are strictly enforced by armed soldiers and police after dark. Street lighting is minimal due to chronic electrical power cuts, and wandering after nightfall carries extreme danger of detention or armed mugging.

Solo and Female Travelers

Unaccompanied travel is not recommended anywhere in Myanmar under present conditions. Public transportation is subject to sudden cancellations and military checkpoints.

Ratings for these appear once you pick a situational context in the sidebar.

Environmental & Natural Hazards

Weather extremes, seismic activity, and natural disaster exposure.

Myanmar lies in a seismically active zone along the Sagaing Fault and experiences periodic strong earthquakes. Construction standards are variable, meaning buildings can be vulnerable to collapse during major tremors.

The coastal regions and low-lying delta areas are vulnerable to severe tropical cyclones between April and May, and October and November. Heavy monsoon rains from June to October frequently trigger flash flooding and landslides in mountainous states.

Named Regional Exceptions

Specific geographic areas where risks significantly deviate from the national baseline (1 active).

📍 Active Conflict and Insurgency States

The Active Conflict and Insurgency States, comprising Sagaing, Magway, Chin, Kachin, Kayah, Kayin, Shan, and Rakhine, are experiencing intense combat operations. Military forces deploy airstrikes, helicopter gunships, and artillery against resistance forces and civilian villages. Heavy landmine contamination along rural footpaths and roadsides poses fatal hazards. Multiple regional border crossings and provincial airports are closed or controlled by insurgent groups. Foreign governments advise against all travel to these states, and consular evacuation is impossible.

Health & Diseases in Myanmar

Strict tripartite separation: endemic disease threats, recommended travel vaccines, and legally mandatory entry certificates.

Dengue fever is a major public health threat, especially during the southwest monsoon from May to October. Use insect repellent with DEET and stay in screened accommodations.

Malaria risk is concentrated in rural, forested, and hilly border areas below 1,000 meters; multidrug-resistant strains are documented along the Thai border. Chemoprophylaxis is recommended for rural travel. Water and foodborne diseases such as typhoid fever and hepatitis A are common; drink only boiled or bottled water and avoid unpeeled produce.

Entry Requirements

Yellow fever vaccination certificates are required only for travelers arriving from or transiting longer than 12 hours through countries with risk of yellow fever transmission.

Recommended Immunizations

Ensure routine vaccinations are up to date. Vaccines for hepatitis A, typhoid, and tetanus are strongly recommended. A Japanese encephalitis vaccine is advisable for travelers staying extended periods in agricultural communities.

📋 Mandatory Entry Regulations

Legally enforced entry documentation required at border control.

⚠️
Yellow Fever Certificate Mandate: Proof of vaccination required if arriving from or transiting (>12h) through a country with risk of Yellow Fever transmission.

Government Advisory Comparison

How the major government advisories compare, and where they genuinely disagree rather than just draw the boundary differently.

International government travel advisories are unified in warning of grave security risks in Myanmar. The United States, Canada, Australia, and Germany advise against all travel to the entire country. The United Kingdom maintains a differentiated advisory, advising against all travel to the conflict-affected states and against all but essential travel to Yangon, Mandalay, and Naypyidaw. All governments highlight the total inability of consular staff to render emergency assistance in rural regions.
